La pornografia degli angeli
Pornography of the angels

“If I were a red indian, alert, vibrant on the galloping horse, riding, on the vibrating ground, without stirrups – because there were no stirrups – casting off the reins – because there were no reins – and I could just see ahead of me like a freshly harvested field, no horse’s neck, no horse’s head.”

Nothing psychological in Kafka’s analysis which strikes the movement of desire. It is not a logic, it is the form itself of desire which is produced only as it is annulled. Does it amaze us that all the physics of this century (micro or macro, nuclear or astral) from the appearance/disappearance of the ghosts of the electron and anti-matter onwards, has been dedicated to the attempt at making an instant hypothetical or virtual particle appear only to disappear immediately? Is it just that their whirling, their literal standing still and moving, here and eleswhere, their flickering and swarming, constitutes and allows the solidity of matter and the form of the objects…? It is natural that in today’s sunrise (yes, precisely ‘natural’, with the sense of unnatural which burns our mouth and mind in risking the word) the object which , more than anything else appears and disappears, the most obvious design set, is the body itself, the object that we carry around and which carries us, which we are and which is us, which we would like to be more, or not be. Vertiginous, the convergence towards the biological (bio-engineering, mutation, duration of individual life…), towards the supposed physical place of the subject, as condensation of a paradoxical humanism of a double rebound from astral profundity or subliminal, subelectronic neuronal… Vertigo and convergence of the century, sensed by Kafka (and among others by Valery, Benjamin, Proust, Joyce, Nietzsche, to remain there, far from “objects”, or just under their appearing, where the chemistry of writing and the physics of the voice are stirring…) in precisely the paradoxical precision of a haiku undoing itself, in the imagedesire which in the instant in which it manifests itself crumbles and decays (indeed, that extremeely rapid release/fading from black and towards black (or white) is the instant itself, the recognition enjoyed and feared which space exists… ‘before (and after) time…).

Naturally (once more…) Baudelaire and Rimbaud (with Monet and Cezanne) had already found and experimented with the obsessive hallucination which constitutes form and objects and the vision itself of the subject (in turn, wavering, corpuscular, intermittent); and we might recall Jean Paul and holderlin Goethe novalis through the struggle between (the beat of?) consciousness and the unconscious in German idealism and in Kant, and the ingenious scattering of the enlightenment thinkers, down and up to the doubt – decisive and constitutive and hyperfilmic (oh, the second “metaphysical meditation” of Descartes. Perhaps finding in Edgar Allan Poe, in his chemistry of the imagination, in his “landscape gardner” , in “eureka”, in his substituting the figure of the maelstrom with that of the maestro, the decisive broadening in the scale of the objects: the world itself – not only the planet – is an “object” which at the form, drinks deforms swallows dissolves in that hallucination which is the subject.

But it is almost useless or too rudimental to go back more than a century. For little more than a century a machine (what’s more, it itself made of extremely rudimental and simple chemistry and physics, and at this moment or at another moment has remained substantially unchanged) technically allows us to “go back in time”, alter space and time and allows its reproduction recording accumulation (beyond, even, the rituality of cave and dark room, the domestication of the world by television, the home delivery of the world on the air…). It is self-evident, so much so as to deny to us evidence of itself, how much the filmic process (beyond its garment of dramatic-narrative) has rendered (despite the relative randomised irregularity of its intervention and production) the idea itself of time and history of an object, a wound and windable ensemble, continuous anniversant return (almost without departure) which the performance enjoys and suffers in a continuous terrible glowing soft caressing celebration.

Magic lantern. Short circuit here, just rubbing it, between desire (once more; obviously), cinema (the object “magic lantern” is among the precursors most constantly evoked and shown by the archaeology of cinema -…how shall we say: by the archaeologies of the archaeology of all archaeologies…), and cinema without equipment and without film, all mental and reticular diffused fractal (without a clear “design”), invented, in fact, by Freud at the same time as the Lumière brothers; by Freud with an extremely filmic archaeological passion: cinema and psychoanalysis produce and re-evoke (with different automaticity and difficulty and approximation…) discourse figures subjects all as if buried/exhumed in strata; in Freud the terrain is the mental, the text (the dream like “the daily life”) is an uncertain image which is made and unmade in continuation.

While Kodak is announcing for just after the year 2001 the end of production of film (indicating the generalised triumph – with respect to the concept of skin and that of dragging/flowing – of a form of synthetic digital electronic tissue, circular, spiral, in the end random, already inside the energy of the eventual motor which drags(ged)/generates the image) we are led to think of how the “insufficient overproduction” (cinema is only oxymorons) of countless “formed” images ( a vast multitude, which in fact sparks off their extermination in the simulation of movement) led us to forget the spectral nature of cinema itself (its “invisibility”; and the technical invisibility because of the evocation of possibly infinite points of view and the mass of “recordings”) and the freudian uncertainty of its “recording”, its diminishing of the world and its own diminishing and tending towards zero, in favour of the luxuriant growth and manifesting of forms (sometimes for the first time), visible and recognisable.
I am evoking the present day alteration and sunset of the cinetelevisual sphere because for the first time the equipment and the devices and the objects themselves by means of which we produce distribute see the cinema (and TV) slim shrink perish disappear phantomise themselves in turn (after having little by little approached the body as a veritable prosthesis, up to that camera which is worn – the steadycam) the more they tend to disappear the more their strength increases and their capacity to evoke and make images appear ever more vivid physical three-dimensional corporeal. (Naturally – the third time… – the aleph horizon does not exclude the present-day encumbrance of megatheatres, or the fascinating architectural extension of the imaxes, technologically intermediate states but also visible and temples necessary for imprisoning glorifying still rendering homage to – and yet more, sharpening exorcising the invisible spreading (which in any case had already taken place…I’m speaking of a raft in a flood zone …or already in the whirlpool…? – the visibility of cinema, its monumentality). Thanks to cinema, its prehensile automaticity, what has multiplied and branched out infinitely has been the possibility to trace document catalogue forms and objects, with all that derives from it in terms of archaicdomesticmuseumbourgeois pleasures and even of enjoyment. (Watching the scenic cinema of Ridley Scott, inane epitome of post-modernity, which in Blade Runner loses the dickian abysses and finds, in fact, and follows – with trite marvel – the ridge of the original copy…). It escaped us and escapes us constantly (and will escape us even more if we do not accept recognition in “us”, in the genre “us”, the transition we are towards an evaporation of the visible) the never seen which remains the cinema, its being a widespread negative mould of the idea itself of the subject and of all the manifestations of the visible. All cinema as a “pornography of the angels” (Benjamin), an obsessive proof which is of/in the seeing and not the “seen”. Anal, too anal, would be curing oneself of the forms we see swarming and which constantly in any case, the us/camera (the movie camera that is in us, the us that is in the movie camera) records. Finally (but it is only a beginning) medicine proposes in this modest and precise 2000 the hallucinating journey foreseen by genre cinema (but already 100 years old before “Strange Days” – all the days of the cinema were “strange” … – as an opticalnmechanical journey through the mental) intestinal cinema no longer alone as a probe, terminal eye of a mabusian tentacular device. They are veritable tablet/shuttles to swallow (and recover as escrement) those which in a number of laboratories have already been experimented: travelling eyes, which run through the flows of the digestive machine or the circulation of the blood in the body. The mental shadow concentrated in the sphericity of the eye becomes eyetablet, punctiform eye, it is dissolved in the body (even before it is implanted as prosthesis plaque, code…). Like money and credit cards, the eye is annulled, it becomes purely abstract and thus able to circulate the/in the body, to cure it while annulling it. Form is denied/drowned in the body which was the measure of forms. Tablets. Suppositories, forms immediately dissolved by/in the body, sweet erotic fearful fleeting forms. Ah…!…they transmit…the eye becomes a virus…definitive language in burrough’s sense…doctors analysts scientists cinematographers spectators watch we watch …- This, if there is one, is the object: the code that we are, the zero grade sign of 2001, time that we wish to remount beyond the speed of light, making appear/disappear that which up to now makes appear/disappear (and here: Lynch, Cronenberg, Kitano, but also Lang, Vigo, Rossellini, Walsh, and Vertov and Ophuls and…). We don’t see. We don’t see to whom for whom, where and from where, from when and up to when we ‘transmit’.

The maximum, which is happening to us, is to recognise ourselves as switches or as space black dark. Formless between one frame and another or desiring fragment of image in search of other tesserae. Our disappearing appears. We inhabit the wind which designs us.
