Quale la priorità attribuita all’immagine?

[english]

Interview with Dante Ferretti
by Fulvio Caldarelli

The city-set is made up of a flow of images in movement: is the cinematographic eye increasingly comparable to the daily eye of a city-dweller who gains experience from urban space?

Shortly after I moved to Rome, I used to get around with public transport. Finally, one day I began to go on foot, finally I say because up to that point I had never raised my head and looked up. I had not yet understood that certain views from below of certain Roman roads managed to capture like no other the aesthetics which marks the eternal city. I had already collaborated in the making of several films in which I had been asked to reconstruct pieces of the city but I had always counted on photographs. I went to inspect a site and took snapshots of the places which interested me for the realization of the set. I had still not discovered that it was only by walking through the city slowly could I achieve an intimate communion with its soul. And that stopping and fixing the eye on certain angles habituates our view to the imperfect nature of the real. The spontaneous superimposition of architectural styles, temporal encrustations sometimes dissonant, shows that in reality, nothing is ever perfect. However, when you make a film it is very easy to fall into the trap of the ‘perfectly’ real, in the attempt to reduce to a minimum whatever stylistic incongruency or imprecision. With experience I understood that vice versa, it is fundamental to make mistakes. Because the mistake makes everything more real, more authentic. I’m not saying that before projecting a reconstruction you don’t have to study everything in detail, from the single cornice to the shop sign. However, the roads in real cities are the result of the bringing together of discordant signs, unorthodox choices. Thus, in a set the best result often is to be obtained contemplating just the errors, mistakes which overall make the atmosphere more credible and thus more magical.

It’s almost a therapy, that of reconstructing, educating the eye against what is recorded…beyond the eclecticism or the Roman architectural style – as opposed to that of other cities…

But everything is a therapy, the action of reconstructing things. You need so much time. When you walk, travel to see things, it’s enough to look around: styles, historical periods, all that you perceive according to which city you are in, which city you live in. I’m speaking of Rome now but Milan too, or Palermo, Naples, New York. That is to say everyone has his style, or more than a style, he has …because it’s not as if there is one style …there is no ‘Roman’ style, or I say Rome is marvellous for what it is; I mean, if it was an area of Rome, that works as well, it’s ok for that historical period, or for that historical period and then social in that moment it was created for. Things change though I think it is fundamental to look, absorb and then each one reconstructs them credibly and as he wishes, or at least this is what I think, it’s my personal opinion.

Did you ever -, as opposed to the great sets of historical reconstruction that we know (Gangsters of New York, rather than Baron von Maunchause)- create urban sets of contemporary cities?

Usually in the case of contemporary cinematographic settings I prefer relying on real locations, maybe intervening directly on them to amplify a narrative requirement or to ricreate a particular atmosphere. The place where a film is shot is fundamental for the plot. And it doesn’t necessarily mean an artificial or fake image. That which counts a lot is just the way you frame things. The same place might generate different views. At times it is surprising how the apposition of a particular light and the simple presence of figures in costume manage to transmit a completely different atmosphere to a real setting left unchanged in everything else. Perhaps the architectural evidence does not change but the mental landscape yes. During the shooting of the film Titus by Julie Taymor I suggested proceeding through the contamination of two very different historical periods. Beside the archaeological sites of the contemporary historical period of Titus Andronicus, we used EUR also. A superimposition which has sense in that the latter too is an architectural expression of the ambitions of a presumed empire, the Fascist

one. Without forgetting that in Rome, many call this emblem of Italian rationalism the ‘square Colosseum’.

In the reconstruction at Cinecittà of one of New York’s streets, Scorsese told you “You’ve gone beyond my imagination’. Apart from the tight philological recon- struction is there, perhaps, unconsciously, a mental image of the city which you pursue and which belongs to you?

Without doubt, in this work of mine as set-designer I satisfy a therapeutic need too. It’s a totally chameleon-like profession. To reconstruct the settings of a given historical period you shouldn’t copy the existent. You have to blend in and relive the era in the first person, pretending to be an architect of the time. It makes no sense to have an impeccable philological reconstruction of the urban landscape for this. Even though a canon exists, an architectural style you can refer to, an imaginary architect would in any case have realized the buildings in a personal style. And this reflection makes eventual criticism by art historians, who might find inexact, inconsistent, certain of my set creations groundless. The justification is that we are dealing not with reconstructions but original projects with my signature on them. That architetct who, crossing the cen- turies, plays from time to time, at taking the part of an exponent of the Baroque style rather than the Gothic style. With a significant advantage, i.e., the set by definition is ephemeral architecture. If they have worked they can imprint themselves in the memory of the public for ever – just think of the urban image inventory left in inheritance by films like Metropolis. In the opposite case they might pass unobserved and fall into oblivion. In the case of real architecture the question is much more critical. This is why I prefer the ephemeral, because if it doesn’t work one can change, cut, demolish, destroy.

Every urban landscape communicates symbolic values and in a film every place has necessarily to trnslate into images. The city of cinematographic fiction develops its symbolic charge through the poetics of transfiguration. What is the priority attributed to the image?

Story and image are indissolubile, this is one of the many lessons that I learned working with Pasolini in the eight films we worked on together. Certainly, the image of the city which belonged to Visconti was far from that of Pasolini even though in Rocco e i suoi fratelli or La terra trema the landscape took on colours of neo-realism. Pasolini’s city was that of the suburbs, the built-up land torn from the countryside outside the city. These were the places of the protagonists of the poor outskirts he wanted to recount. He followed every set choice, both shooting live and reconstructions in the theatre. Each image went back to painting. The ways and the forms of this expressive form which represented the model, the parameter of judgement of every framing. Pasolini used to tell me over and over that the painter when he went to portray on the canvass, removed all those things which were useless. He only painted the essential to achieve the essence. So, thinking about the indoor settings in the Decameron we imagined a set, for example, a bedroom, drawing up a minimum list of objects, like a bed, a chair a cupboard and a candle. Then in fact we added other details. But the intention was always that of looking at the ‘graphic’ aspects of reality.

[40
42,14,27,41
