The Beatles, Rooftop concert, 1969

Gurrelieder: Part 1″ by Arnold Schoenberg, partitura.

[english]

Interview with Giorgio Battistelli
by Fulvio Caldarelli

The lost interval. In music too, the diastematic space is fundamental in the perceptive process, a functional device for the attribution of discretion within the sound flow. The contemporary urban landscape often produces in those who inhabit the space, a pathological horror pleni. Thanks to his sensitivity the con- temporary music composer is also aware of the widespread sense of urgency, the need to re-establish lost intervals

The horror of silence, a void which is also a carrier of ambiguity, often has no reason to exist; paradoxically, nowadays we are surrounded by silence. Actually, an excess of sound densification produces silence. This is where the interval can act in offering equilibrium. And the interval is always a conquest. The question is not so much in the density of the full and the empty, rather it is in the perception of the appearance of being there or not. Certainly, the perceptive system of the contemporary listener has changed radically compared to only twenty years ago. How people listen has shifted from a horizontal diachronic perception to a vertical position. We are able to listen to compositions which belong to a very remote past and, at the same time, musical productions of our own time. Listening, freed of temporal and spatial perspectives, has become vertical. I imagine the listener of our times with a large eye and a small ear. I would say that rather than fear of silence, the crucial question is that we are no longer capable of listening, not only as a result of of hypertrophy and the abnormal production of sounds all around us. The point is that we no longer possess the instruments to penetrate sound. Thus, listening is completely devoured, swallowed up by vision. Without doubt we are living through a cultural and anthropological transformation of very fast listening. Not only because these historical perspectives have been annulled, but also in virtue of the novelty in fruition and the new ritual dimensions which lead back to music. Still today, being present at a concert is a very precise intentional choice; what has changed radically are the expectations which accompany listening. Our ear is by now three-dimensional. Technological devices have corrupted our sensorial abilities. An alteration in the perceptive system, not only as far as live performances of pop and rock music are concerned, but which also deforms the expectations of a classical music audience and so called ‘elevated music’. We are now used to listening to music with high fidelity reproduction and distribution systems, so going to a concert, we risk being disappointed by the lack of depth and richness of technological reproduction.

And then probably the conception and function of noise has changed too. In western music noise has always been considered that sonorous entity which lives outside the tempered system. The tempered system is that on which all western music is founded – the twelve sounds rationalised by Bach which become the dodecaphonic system conceived by Arnold Schoenberg in the 1920s. All the sounds which move outside this system have been considered up to now ‘noises’. Nowadays, though, what is considered ‘noise’ is all that which interrupts communication. If, during our conversation the sound of a violin reached our ears, those all-consuming notes would be nothing other than an interference, an element which disturbs our communicative process.

Sensitivity is the child of knowledge. In this information society, can the widespread accessibility of knowledge contribute to the birth of a new consciousness of listening?

In this respect, I would like to recall a quotation by Roland Barthes “We have lost wisdom for knowledge”. The way I see it, we have recently lost knowledge for information. Information has produced a homogenization of perception rather than a qualitative increase in our capacity to listen. The hope is that all these possibilities for knowledge at our disposal might actually lead to a deep revaluation of the expressive level, even to the detriment of the excessive attention given to the technical aspect. Often we concentrate too much on technical aspects, neglecting the fundamentally intuitive aspect of the expressive moment. At times, by means of the expressive force of a gesture or a dynamic we can render completely insignificant and marginal, certain technical deficiencies. Moreover, when I find myself looking at a work by Francis Bacon, that which strikes me immediately is not the technical but the expressive element.

What is the imaginative strength of the urban scenario offered by an opera written to be performed in 2011, as a rereading of Al Gore’s essay An Inconvenient Truth on the global climatic consequences of pollution for the planet?

In An Inconvenient Truth the city will be present as a total entity. And thus, with its own spirit, its own sounds, images, life, its own dynamics. It will be precisely this multiform presence which will be interiorized by the theatre. Architecture and the movement of the people who live the experience of the city will also have a place on the stage at the Teatro della Scala. For one of the electronic sections of the work I have decided to experiment with cameras and acoustic sensors which will be arranged at certain points around Milan and will capture images and sounds and bring them, live, inside the theatre. These signs and signals will come into contact with certain elements of the orchestra and will thus modify the live sound – perhaps a choice dictated by my desire to transform the whole reality into music. What I want is to translate the present, ever more mysterious because it is in continuous transformation.

I have to admit that when I was commissioned this project I immediately asked myself if it still made sense in the 21st century to write an opera and above all in what narrative register, epic or mythological? Or would it have be better to follow in the tracks of the postmodern novel? And the project is to be presented in 2011 on the occasion of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy. In the end I have chosen to show Italy in a global dimension, using contents which avoid the arrival at purely ideological positions or hackneyed political diatribe. In other words, if my opera was to be able to communicate say to the public of Sydney like the public of Bombay, the theme had necessarily to be universal, tragically universal even. And the relation between man and the environment seemed to me the perfect theme, from a dramaturgical viewpoint also. Al Gore’s book fascinated me from the start. And it is not the first time that I have managed to convince myself that essay writing stimulates the collective image inventory more than poetry or prose. Essay writing nowadays offers us an imaginary perimeter often wider with respect to literature, perhaps slower in the appropriation of those questions which concern topicality. Almost as if the novel had exhausted most of its imaginary force of projection.

[38
14,33,37,39
