Arte come produzione biologica….

O come respiro biologico. E tende sempre a risposte problematiche.

Dare un nome all’indicibile.

E così, abbiamo finito in bellezza.

Are the forces which a work of art generates so different to the cliché of immediate intuition and the stroke of genius?

My background has been an intellectual adventure and has its origins in negative thought, German philosophy, French structuralism. The importance of this question is more relevant than ever and defining what the dynamics which describe a work of art are, in both the phase of production and then enjoyment, is still under discussion. One possible answer is still synthesized in the title of the first book I published forty years ago, Il territorio magico, in which I suggested an interpretation of art as concerning both the internal perspective of the one who produces it and the external perspective of the public and the society it appeals to. Certainly, art responds to the individual instinct of the artist who then, externally, encounters an interpretation able to contextualize and widen the subjective impulse to society as a whole. Art has an anthropological significance, it is an attempt on the part of the artist to ‘repair’, with his gesture, a partiality to which the world subjects him, so as to restore a relation to the idea of totality and reconnect with the world. By means of the creative act, the artist elaborates the mourning of a detachment. Because art re-establishes hope, a desire for totality.

Art as biological production…

Or as biological respiration. On the biology of art, Rosario Assunto wrote some very interesting books. A solitary philosopher, courageous, he knew a lot about how to restore this idea of art which reacts to mourning, the creative gesture which restores totality to the subject making the gesture. Art, by means of specific tools and a specific language places itself constantly face to face with the external world, dialectically. “Art pointing at the world” to quote Picasso. In this sense art possesses a constant, inevitable political significance which, however, does not assume the form of ‘tracing’. It does not pass through emulation or that inferiority complex which actually affected many artists and intellectuals of the 1968 generation. Convinced that art was an answer, a solution to humanity’s problems, many people at the time became guardian angels of the cyclostyle. Whereas art is a question about the world. And tends always towards problematic answers. Precisely in virtue of the issues raised, art assumes a political importance.

Because in a context anaesthetized by telematic spectacularization, art is called upon to capture attention and shake up the collective image inventory. A work of art has to massage the muscle anaesthetized, atrophied by a collective contemplation reduced to that which I call ‘pellicular sensitivity’. Art punches a hole in indifference and awakens dulled critical activity. It is like an alarm system which raises the problem of that which we want to perceive and alerts us about what we decide not to consume. Thus, artistic language promotes new processes of knowledge and in this sense, albeit born in the instinctiveness of an asocial gesture, it later becomes a social gesture. Paraphrasing the provocative statement by Kokoschka “Assassin hope for women”, in the past I wrote “Artist and assassin, hope for life”. The artistic instinct is always born solitary and is an antagonist, the artist is not a special correspondent of reality, he is a special correspondent against reality. He does not have a calming role, he is no nurse, he is by definition alarmed and alarming. Thus the initial propositional act of creation is an act of self-defence by the artist, he produces beauty and beauty – as Leon Battista Alberti wrote – is a form of defence in life. Or – as Baudelaire suggested – beauty is a promise of happiness. This is why art is coloured. It is by no means Lenten as so many designers and the sentinels of Nothingness were proposing in 1968, perpetrating a self-penalizing reductionism, counter-reformation fencing. Even though art is born from a negativity as an impulse towards the elaboration of mourning, the great miracle is that it goes beyond the solitary dimension of the individual to become a gesture capable of getting in touch with the social and perhaps even tripping it up! The greatness of the language of art resides in just this capacity to arrive at and intercept life and society. Art needs the gaze: it is healthily narcissistic. And narcissism is the ecological engine of the whole of humanity, it represents that affirmative pulsion of life which induces all of us to restore a stylistic figure, a form, an image, some form of writing, indicating our passage. Whereas vanity is only the pret-à-porter of narcisism.

And the Transavanguardia? What pulsion does it offer compared to the avant-garde?

I adopted the prefix trans- to indicate an idea of transition of art in a context of postmodernity, the willingness and capacity to recover the past without nostalgic fallback. In the first place, in recuperating painting as language, albeit as a morganatic matrimony between Picasso and Duchamp. The Transavanguardia represented the recovery of expressivity and subjectivity innate to painting. But citing styles of the past takes on the form of the ready-made. Thus, the material eroticism of pictorial language is in any case accompanied by a conceptual aspect. And therefore, does not represent an overturning of the experimental idea of the avant-gardes, but goes beyond that ideology of linguistic Darwinism which they implied. At the origin of historical avant-gardes there is a linear and progressive evolutionary idea of art: every movement, in virtue of new techniques and new materials experimented on, represents the progressive overcoming of the previous one. As if art consisted only of techne. The Transavanguardia, through the recognition of the subjectivity of the artist, formulates an answer to the impersonality and the objectivity which have characterised currents with north-American origins like Minimal art and Conceptual Art, and recovers, by means of memory, a genius loci and a specificity which, on the same wavelength, only European art could – and still can – propose. It is not by chance that with the Transavanguardia there is a miraculous overturning also of the equilibria of the system of art.

Actually I often find myself defining it as the first no-global movement because, with respect to American movements, it promotes glocal instances, synthesizing subject identities, genius loci and going beyond borders. A vision light years away from that of the globalising alienation which, however, does not withdraw even in territorial localism. In fact, it maintains the capacity to conjugate itself in an international language maintaining that which De saussure would have defined idiolect, or personal accent of the subject. Therefore, Transavanguardia does not mean anti-avanguardia. Coining this term and developing its critical theory I wanted to oppose those who were fashionable then, when alongside the noun art, adjectives like conceptual or poor were employed. Poversimo was nothing other than the moralistic, Franciscan response to the society of opulence, a moralism which in no way aimed at the autonomy of art, but its heteronomy and consocial dependence. But the urgency of art, as I see it, is that of relating to the outside through antagonism which is the result of a leakage from the original solitude towards contemplation on the part of the gaze of others, the socialization and consumption of art. If the result of the precepts of Conceptual Art is a work of art dematerialized into anorexia, Transavanguardia production restores body to it, physicality and forms through nomadism and stylistic eclecticism. With its idea of transit it overtook, in architecture too, the impasse of postmodernism, where the prefix post- was in controversy with architectural modernism and rationalism. Trans- is a prefix which is still very relevant in times in which complexity and ambiguity continue to be necessary. And if , in the past, the influence of the Transavanguardia has made Arte Povera less monochromatic, the projects of so many contemporary megastars continue breaking down the practice of contamination, reconversion and nomadism.

Giving the unsayable a name. How do you reconcile the contingent instinct of the creative act with the naming phase?

Before I became an art critic I was a visual poet. My origins are literature, from Gruppo 63. Every time I write a book I take great care with the title, because it represents the initial illumination of the thought which will be exposed. And I don’t think I’m overdoing it when I say that I think I have always chosen beautiful titles. With poverism the artist, to mortify the subjective accent of his imagination and assert the procedural value of the work ,was forced to accept anonymity and the Senza titolo. Testifying to the fact that the work was not the final form, the result, it was rather his ‘doing’ as an active process of association of materials. The artist of the Transavangardia on the other hand, develops a further passage, in my opinion, which is more courageous. He retrieves the pride of the attempt to arrive at form, the finale of the work. A work which, like any baby who comes into the world after months of gestation, needs, in the end, a name. In abstract, or through the figurative image, the work of art confirms one of its final aspects, a concluded form of aesthetic values which in the Sixties were combated and seen as the venal sins of an artist who, rather, was called upon to mortify, penalise himself. Half way through the 1970s, after the crisis of exclusively conceptual language, art retrieved the subject, the Transavanguardia rediscovered the autonomy of the work and therefore, its naming. Beyond astrattismo and figurativismo. Because looking at a work by De Dominicis, Chia or Cucchi I can close the judgement by referring to these two categories of belonging. I am convinced that another, alternative category exists to figuration, that of the ‘figurable’, a language which slips, recedes and shifts because it is liquid. And the Transavanguardia produced something figurable which has more to do with willingness to move on the part of liquid material than the immobility of solids.

Land Art. A landscape which is not indifferent and new mental maps. What is the relation between private space, public space and social space?

Land Art is an extraordinary language which was born in America in the 1960s and only experimented by us later. If Pop Art is urban art – the consumer society which finds classicality through its Raphael, Andy Warhol – Land Art represents its antithesis. Works by exponents like Morris, Smithson and Oppenheim are an expression of the pioneering anthropology of the American man and an idea of the innocence of nature. A rapport of the human dimension in scale with the landscape through interventions which necessitate large spaces and technology. In Christo the European sensitivity encounters the American dimension. Concealment (a procedure borrowed from Man Ray and Surrealism) found an application in the building from beyond the ocean, concealing/indicating the Californian coast.

The force of the unpredictable. The gesture of art in an urban scenario: unplanned interactions and collective game.

Behind all this, we have the great lesson of the historical avant-garde. Consider the Futurist evenings where a riot was a clash – no metaphor here – wishing to arrive at hand to hand combat in an attempt at intervening in every aspect of the real, to shake up the ‘immobilism’ in the peasant civilization of an as yet pre-industrial Italy, introducing values like speed and aggressivity. The Futurists, and Marinetti above all, were interventionist by definition and for fifteen years had an autonomous, independent revolutionary role but then gave themselves up to the mortal embrace with Fascism.

Antonio Gramsci himself in the pages of the second issue of Ordine nuovo, a journal edited by Pietro Godetti, defined the Futurists as authentic artists of the avant-garde because of the renewal produced in their language, and creative revolutionaries because they were producers of a new art appropriate for that class – the proletariat – for whom the artists and intellectuals of the left were doing nothing. Not to mention Dada, the movement I perhaps love the most because of its active nihilism. An openly intransigent avant-garde which produced anti-art, experimenting, in the Cabaret Voltaire evenings, the first modern form of interdisciplinary and multimedia creativity, the performance. And then, obviously, Surrealism, recovering the effect of surprise, the emergence of the unconscious and internal drive.

The theatre of Artaud which was to turn up again in the Living Theatre. All, preambles which led to the American happening and the collective events, with the Gruppo Fluxus breaking into the routine of the urban scenario. A season whose tutelary deity was John Cage with characters like Patterson, Schmit, Gosewitz, Maciunas. Initiatives which in the productive geometry of the city appeal to the participation of the public toexercise a creative action, non-functional and devoid of any economic logic. Gestures capable of shaking up and piercing widespread disattention, introducing improvisation, the unexpected and the ‘trip up’, appealing directly to the spectator. So as to renew the Utopia inherited by the historical avant-gardes, the reduction of the distance between art and life

You frequented and shared the life of many artists who were the subject of your critical activity. How important is the instinct and strategy of those who interpret phenomena?

I decided to beef up the critic and to confer ‘protagonism’ upon him through the three levels of writing which, I believe, it is his job to do. The essayist by means of books, the exhibiton-organizer through exhibitions, the behavioural role using his own life. This last level was totally absent , the critic was a servant on the stage, a lateral figure who still accepted passively the traditional hierarchy with respect to the artist. As the scholars taught, first there was the obscure intuition of the artist and then the critical reflection. Well, I believe in a society like today’s where division of intellectual work counts, the artist and the critic are complementary figures, the one who creates and the one who reflects. Already in 1962 I had theorised the system of art, this sort of St Anthony’s chain which necessarily brings together different agents, each of them carriers of their own professionalism: the artist, the critic, the gallery-owner, the collector, the museum curator, the media, and finally the public. Over the years auctions and international fairs have joined up, shaping a system of global art. In such a context the critic, as I think I managed to show, is carrier of a double word, the first in the solitude of his own activity with theorization and writing, the second in the Socratic conviviality of living with artists. Frequenting artists has been a necessity for me. But not as a doctor of the artistic soul or custodian angel – rather the angel of death. I like being with those artists with whom I have in common an exchange of words, verification, the sense of the game, the construction of an intellectual adventure which can take the form of an exhibition, a theory, a movement. I represent the assertion of protagonism of the art critic. I began curating my first exhibition Amore mio in Montepulciano: in the exhibition catalogue each artist had at his disposal nine pages and I decided to publish on nine pages a photograph of myself taken by Mulas, accompanying it with a reflection on death, taken from Nietzsche. After my self-signalling in Bolaffi Arte, in 1988-89 my nudes in the magazine Frigidaire made visible the body of the critic stripped by art. My professional adventure, forty years long by now, has always developed around this idea of criticism which shares with art the same creative drive. If art responds to its own instinct through the production of images, criticism expresses its own creativity through writing and other relevant activities. However, both art and criticism develop a conflictual rapport with the exterior, guided by the desire for a mature dialogue with the world surrounding it. Art pointing at the world – to conclude, by quoting Picasso – is not an art which shoots to hit, the world is its target but only in that it is an act of self-defence which counterpoises the Beautiful as a promise of happiness. So there we are – we’ve finished, out with a bang!

Intervista a Achille Bonito Oliva.
L’istinto dell’artista.
