That word, Fähnen, has been translated in many different ways, yet one possible interpretation identifies it as “weathervane”. This is definitely the understanding, a few years after the first publication of the verses by Hölderlin, of Wilhelm Müller, the author of the lieder of the Die Winterreise cycle set to music by Franz Schubert, when he talks of Wetterfähne (which is specifically a weather or wind vane) and, many years later, of two Italian disciples who were also two of the greatest 20th-century poets in Italy. Eugenio Montale, in the Casa dei doganieri [The House of the Customs] Men clarifies “on top of the roof the weathervane / blackened by smoke” which “spins pitilessly” (his friend and accomplice Gianfranco Contini had just translated Hälfte des Lebens). Andrea Zanzotto, in Sovrimpressioni, in the “Avventure metamorfiche del feudo”, paraphrases and includes extracts of these verses by Hölderlin. Both poets, incidentally, were to identify in the weather conditions an objective and ideal correlative for expressing the pressing threat of the conditions that were their lot (Montale in Bufera [Storm], Zanzotto in Meteo [Weather], a collection from 1996, in the fortieth anniversary year of the publication of that of his predecessor, wholly dedicated to this allegorical imagery). Italian, unlike other languages, allows in fact short-circuiting of time understood as a historical event (mostly expressed in the plural – tempi [times]. The Pound of Hugh Selwyn Mauberley would have said, instead, the age) and time in the meaning of weather. “The current climate” or, in the words of another great master of Italian poetry in the second half of the twentieth century, Edoardo Sanguineti, in Laborintus (a poem which came out the same year as Bufera by Montale) who in this circumstance even quoted Stalin, “external conditions” (which “clearly actually exist”).

Moreover the concept of climate has often been used, in turn, as a metaphor for a specific historical state. The air we breathe corresponds to the wind flow, both light and violent, of the conceptions of the ideologies of formulae – everything which Michel Foucault, in other words, called “discourse” – which circulate in a society, in a given time in history, in fact. We can see it clearly today: a poisoned, contaminated air, that of the dark times in which we have to live. When Gore Vidal used in his literary essays the metaphor of the canary and the coal mine it was to recall an old miners’ custom. When they had to descend in certain dark recesses with the risk of gas, they took with them a cage with a canary inside. When the canary fainted, they hurried back up to the top.

Thus, with a varyingly sweet singing voice and varyingly confined in a cage, we have the writer as a canary. Here we will consider that tradition of authors who have succeeded in taking up, in the smallest ripples of the symbolic atmosphere of a given period, the foreshadowing of the storms to come. In some cases putting out feelers to sound out the present; in others explicitly imagining the future on the basis of that same present. As Fredric Jameson wrote in his essay on science fiction (Archaeologies of the Future, translated only in part into Italian with the title Il desiderio chiamato Utopia), “Utopian form is itself a representational meditation on radical difference, radical otherness, and on the systemic nature of social totality”. Whether positive, or negative as it has been configured much more often in the modern age, the imagined form of the future is on the one hand the claim that another time is possible (so that human action, and not some unfathomable fate, is responsible for our own time to bend one way or the other) and on the other hand, far from being an escape from our own time (as understood by those who for so long segregated the narrative of anticipation into the “genre ghetto” of science fiction) is a sort of overturned and anamorphic reflection of it, which highlights in fluorescent colours those ripples, differences in level, that opacity, so difficult to make out with the naked eye, which in turn anticipate the conditions to come. Highlighting, enlarging and exaggerating those already sensitive today: down there, at the bottom of the mine, watching the flags which creak on the horizon.

(Tratto da/from: NB.
